Does Medicare cover hearing aids?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover hearing aids or the exams to fit them. Medicare's own guidance is explicit on this point.

But that's not the whole story. Part B does cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams when a provider orders them to determine whether you need medical treatment. And since January 1, 2023, you can see an audiologist once every 12 months without a doctor's order for certain diagnostic hearing tests, if your hearing loss is non-acute — the kind that develops gradually over years.

Two things that rule does not do: it doesn't cover balance or dizziness testing, which still requires an order, and it doesn't make hearing aid evaluations or fittings covered. Original Medicare still excludes those.

And most importantly: the large majority of Medicare Advantage plans do include a hearing benefit — most cover the hearing test and provide an allowance toward hearing aids. What varies from plan to plan is how much, how often you're eligible, and whether there's a copay on top. Some plans cover a good portion of the cost; others cover a smaller share. That's why the first step is always to check yours.

Please read this before you plan around any number on this page

Every plan is different, and nothing on this page is a guarantee.

Two people can carry a card from the same insurance company and have completely different hearing benefits. Coverage depends on your specific plan, your plan year, your eligibility history and your individual circumstances.

The information on this website may not match your plan. Insurers change their benefits, allowances, networks and policies — often at the start of each calendar year, and sometimes mid-year. What is accurate on the day we publish it may not be accurate on the day you read it, and what your benefits look like on the day we check them may differ from what they looked like when this page was written.

A benefits verification is a good-faith check, not a promise of payment. Insurers can and do make final coverage determinations after services are provided.

The only reliable answer for your situation is a verification done for your plan on today's date — and that's exactly what we do, for free, before you commit to anything.

What Insurance Typically Covers

Coverage varies by plan, but here's how it usually breaks down:

ServiceTypically covered?
Diagnostic hearing evaluation (audiometry + tympanometry) ✅ Commonly covered by Medicare Part B, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid and most commercial plans
Hearing aid evaluation and fitting ⚠️ Depends on plan — most Medicare Advantage plans include it; Original Medicare does not
Hearing aids (the devices) ⚠️ Not covered by Original Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage plans provide an allowance, but the amount and frequency vary widely — in many cases it doesn't cover the full cost
Follow-up visits and adjustments ✅ Usually included with the fitting
Earwax removal (cerumen management) ✅ Often covered when medically necessary
Tinnitus evaluation ⚠️ Commonly covered as part of a diagnostic evaluation
Custom ear protection ❌ Rarely covered — usually out of pocket

This table describes what we see most often. It is not a guarantee of your benefits, and your plan may work differently. The only reliable answer comes from verifying your specific plan on today's date — which we do for free.

How We Verify Your Benefits

1. You give us your plan information. Call, use the chat widget on this page, or just bring your insurance card to your appointment. We need the plan name and your member ID.

2. We contact your insurer and check your hearing benefits. What's covered, what your out-of-pocket cost would be, whether you need a referral or prior authorization, and how often you're eligible.

3. We tell you the numbers before you commit to anything. If your plan doesn't cover what you need, we'll say so plainly and walk you through the alternatives. (A verification tells us what your insurer says today; it isn't a guarantee of final payment — but it means you go in informed instead of guessing.)

This is free, and you're not obligated to book anything.

If Your Plan Doesn't Cover Hearing Aids

Not having coverage doesn't mean not having options.

  • Payment plans. We offer flexible financing so the cost is spread over months, not paid at once.
  • CareCredit. We're a CareCredit provider — a healthcare credit line with interest-free promotional periods.
  • Range of price points. We fit seven manufacturers (Phonak, Widex, Oticon, ReSound, Signia, Starkey, Unitron) across entry-level to premium. A well-fitted entry-level hearing aid outperforms a poorly-fitted premium one, every time.
  • Tell us your budget. It's a normal conversation and it changes what we recommend. We'd rather fit you with something you can afford and will actually wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my doctor to see an audiologist?

It depends. Under Original Medicare you can have certain diagnostic hearing tests once every 12 months without a physician's order, if your hearing loss is gradual. Outside that — if you're coming for dizziness or balance, if you need a hearing aid evaluation, or if you've already used that visit in the past 12 months — you do need an order from your doctor. Many Medicare Advantage and HMO plans also require a referral. We check all of this for you when we verify your benefits, before you come in.

Does Florida Medicaid cover hearing aids?

Yes. Unlike many states, Florida Medicaid covers hearing aids for adults as well as children — including the evaluation, the device, the fitting, earmolds and follow-up visits. There are limits on how often you're eligible, and members under 21 may qualify for more when it's medically necessary. Your managed care plan administers the benefit and may require prior authorization. We verify your specific case before your appointment.

My card says Cigna but you list HealthSpring. Which is it?

Both. HCSC purchased Cigna's Medicare business and renamed it HealthSpring effective 2026. Cigna still exists for commercial and employer plans. We accept both — bring whichever card you have.

How much does a hearing test cost without insurance?

Call us for current self-pay pricing. We'll quote you before you come in, not after.

How often can I get new hearing aids through insurance?

Most Medicare Advantage plans allow a new set every 1 to 3 years. We'll tell you your exact eligibility date when we verify your benefits.

Can I come after work?

Yes — that's exactly what we're built for. We see patients from 6 PM to 9 PM Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 10 AM to 5 PM. No weekday appointments during business hours, and no need to take a day off.
